Beauty tools: Beauty Blender vs B. Beauty Blending Sponge

Beauty Blender vs B. Latex-free Blending sponge

Ok, that’s really too many ‘b’s in a title, sorry.

I started using the Beauty Blender (top, in the photo) last year in a last-ditch attempt to get Nars Sheer Glow to work on my skin, having tried all of my brushes and a Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. It worked amazingly well and it became my tool of choice for a lot of my bases and concealers. However, they don’t last forever and at £16 each they can get pretty spendy to keep replacing, so I’ve been on the lookout for a worthy ‘dupe’ and think I’ve found one that I actually prefer…

Enter the B. Latex-Free Blending Sponge (bottom). It’s £4.99 from Superdrug and looks almost identical to the Beauty Blender, except that it’s a little dumpier with a wider bottom (I know how it feels). It has a slightly different texture when it’s wet – it’s hard to describe but it has a certain squishiness which the actual Beauty Blender doesn’t have. The latter is definitely spongy and soft when wet but the B. version feels almost like a squashy gel, rather than a foam. However you describe it, I find it better at bouncing on foundation evenly, and the bigger bottom makes it slightly quicker than the Beauty Blender as well. They’re both easy to wash – both lose a bit of pink dye each time – and both give a natural look with no caking but still giving coverage.

The next time that I have to replace one of them, I’d definitely get another B. Blending Sponge, rather than a Beauty Blender. They’re cheaper, they work just as well, if not slightly better, and they’re more fun to bop all over your face due to the odd texture. Bit of a no-brainer, really.

Do you like bouncing the small pink egg over your face or do you stick to brushes?

  2. I’ve never used one but I’ve been curious – I feel like my foundation isn’t giving me a massively even coverage at the moment so I’m not sure if one of these would help!
